I don't know that we did. No one recieved confirmation of their votes. I have no verification at all that my votes were recorded by the electronic machine that I HAD to use recorded my vote for John Kerry correctly. Neither did ANYONE else.
So, don't blame me, I know I voted to have the fucking idiot licked out of office. I've NEVER voted for that fool.
"Most" people didn't. There was only a 60% turnout, and it wasn't a huge difference in votes - 62 against 59 mill, if I remember rightly. I just remember that Bush's gang crowed about "more votes than any president in history", but when I looked it up, I discovered that Kerry ALSO got more votes than any president in history. So that's some small consolation. So, 50% of the votes from 60% turnout - that means that only 30% of eligible voters wanted Bush to stay. So not really that many.
Why did those 62 million vote for him? Gay marriage and terrorism - two things that scared his core voters enough to vote for a dude who would supposedly keep them safe from these terrible things...
So a left wing magazine manages to find a left wing historian to call Bush the worst president in history? Wow, like that's a real surprise.
So if some right wing magazine had a right wing historian announce that Bush was the best president ever, would you guys suddenly have to agree with that? Or would you realize that it's just some magazine pushing it's agenda, just like Rolling Stone?
Gee, didn't take long for the anonymous right winger to chime in.
I read the article just yesterday and there's no agenda being pushed at all. It simply lays out everything Bush did wrong throughout the past five years and compared his record to other presidents history has deemed lousy: most notably James Buchanan, Andrew Johnson and Herbert Hoover. The writer made it a point to note that most historians (over 80% and from both sides of the political spectrum) consider him to be a failure for the simple reason that he will leave the state of the nation worse off than when he took office. In fact, our country will be in much worse shape—economically, internationally and militarily—than when Clinton’s term was over. He also noted how Bush reached the highest popularity of any president ever and managed to squander it by pushing failed policies to the point of becoming our country’s most unpopular president. Ever.
The writer was very careful to lay out the facts as they stand, knowing that right-wingers like anonymous would cry, "Liberal Bias!" If anonymous bothered to read the article, he or she would know this. So I would urge him or her to actually read the article before commenting again so they will know what the hell they’re talking about next time around. Thank you.
I voted for Bush. Twice. If Kerry had won the election, would that mean my vote wasn't counted?
I think both parties are twisted and the Amercan people spend their time arguing over silly issues. Distractions.
WG, we may disagree on some political issues, but have you ever thought about running for some sort of office yourself? Even sadder than voter turn out rate, is the inability of regular folk to serve in the government. Saddest, is the lack regular folk who desire to serve. All we do is complain.
Jimbo, thank you for those numbers. I didn't have the ability to get them last night as it was quite late when I posted.
Anon, you know, the article quotes a veritable bastion of conservatism... William F. Buckley as saying "one can't doubt that the American objective in Iraq has failed," and in another article written prior to the last elections, by one of THE standard bearers of the "conservatives, teh venerable (and much loved) Bob Barr says "The oft-repeated mantra that "the terrorists made us spend more" rings hollow, especially to those who actually understand that increases in nondefense discretionary spending are not the inevitable result of fighting terrorists.". Don't believe me? You may find the article referenced here: http://atlanta.creativeloafing.com/2004-10-07/news_flankingaction.html Read the articles and if you've got something intelligent ot say, then you're welcome to say it, as long as you have the stones to identify yourself. Dissenting views are tolerated here, cowards are not.
Shawn, yes, the writer was very careful to lay out the facts. I'm sure he knew that those loyal to Bush would raise a great hue and cry over this.
Eddie, Kerry DID NOT have th CEO of Diebold Industries (maker or the electronic voting machines) vow that he would "deliver Ohio" for him. Bush DID. And, gee, golly, which state was the last state counted and the state that threw Bush over the top? Oh, WOW, that musta been OHIO! My question, which you can attempt to answer, is simple... if I can get a reciept for the quarter I spent at the local convience store for a chocolate covered cherry, WHY THE FUCK CAN'T I GET A GOD-DAMNED FUCKING RECIEPT THAT CONFIRMS MY VOTE? HUH?
Eddie, I'm not "picking on" you. You started off with a eff'n smart ass respond and I responded in a like tone. 'Course, you're not doing so well with the last reply either in lack of smart assedness...
As for your current smart alecky suggestion, I'd sooner be shot, dead, than watch anything on FOX "news". (More like FOX right-wing propoganda, if you ask me.)
And, to answer your "question", why in the world would I want to run for public office? Politicians don't influence the masses... movies do.
Why in the HELL, do you keep mentioning May 1? If you're going on and on about the Nicholl, I've already entered.
-------------------------------------
Dave, LOL, what can I say... Freudian slip of the fingers... it WAS late! ;)
ps... Eddie, I HAVE served in our government, I spent 4 years in the Army. AND, I don't "just complain", I vote, I give money to causes/candidates I think are worthy (think fundraisers) and I (sometimes) do volunteer work for organizations and candidates I support.
60% turn out for voting, that's pretty good - but only in comparison to the fact that in the UK last election I read approx 25% turned out to vote! I think we must be the most apathetic nation on earth sometimes, which is a real shame, as in WW2 we were tiny, triple hard bastards. I am always the youngest person IN my polling station (I've never missed even so much as a local by-election, no matter WHERE I've been living). I am 26, way over polling age. That's a sorry state of affairs. People DIED for us to vote, especially women. Gets on my tits!!!
I love this week when President Hu met with President Duh.
My brother leaves this month for a one-year tour of duty in Iraq, or as his unit calls it, "The most dangerous place on earth." Odd that they call it that, what with all of the good news going on there. . . .
Eddie, really, was that May 1 crap called for? Btw, I compregend you just fine; you don't like it that I loathe the fucker in the WHite House. Great. Come up with a viable alternative and we'll "talk".
Let me remind you this is MY Blog. I can put any damn opinion on here I want. You, on the other hand don't have to come here. If you don't like what I post, don't read it. It's pretty simple.
History will judge this dolt brutally. My great wish is that I live long enough to see the truth come out. I think my rage from November 3rd, 2004 can still be felt in parts of New Guinea. Oh well. I’ve come to the internal conclusion that there are a whole group of utterly worthless human beings that enthusiastically voted for “Dubya”. I will enjoy watching them all suffer for that choice, as gas rises above $4/gal. and oil executives continue laughing all the way to their Swiss bank accounts.
I’m sick of it, but what can I do? I choose to sit back and laugh and channel all of my hostility into my screenplays, paintings, drawings, sculptures, and eating (that’s the only bad side).
I’ll raise my glass (with you, wherever you are) once Bush is buried by history as officially being the worst president EVER.
But I’m not bitter, and that’s what really matters most.
Devin, I too, am sick of this administration and their mistakes. Unfortunately, not only will those who voted for 'lil Shrub have to pay these ridiculous rates for gas, WE (those who didn't vote for the village idjit from Texus) have to pay too! I make a decent living, so while it's a burr that irritates me, it's disater to those who are among the working poor (any kinda poor actually). In Atlanta, 4 years ago, we were paying LESS THAN ONE DOLLAR A GALLON for the lowest grade of unleaded. How can those who were barely scraping by then begin to get by now? It's great that you're not "bitter", but I hardly think "that's what matters most".
I think what matters most is how the hell we survive this idiot and hid minions and how do we "fix" HIS mistakes.
Sadly, I don't have the answers to that. I doubt that anyone does at this point in time. Shrub is like a cancer, his mistakes and bad jufgments have spread throughout or nation and there may be some radical procedures required before we can begin down the road to recovery from this fool.
I'm glad to know that my wife and I are not alone. There are a few other smart Americans out there.
Carry on, ~Devin
P.S. How is your screenwriting going? What contests have you entered? Visit my blog, and let's chat about our mutual interests and aspirations if you like.
Devin, I hope to hell those "smart Americans" number more than those 7 who read this blog!
As for my screenwriting... I've just recently entered the 2nd contest ever. The Nicholl. Yep, the Mack Daddy of screenwrtin' contests and they just got ME. (LOL)
The first one I ever entered was the Writer's Arc (Winter 2005) and I was selected as a finalist, although (woe is me) not one of the winners. I have a rather through post about the special joy it was sending in my feature length script by the deadline, it's in last month's archive if you'd care to read it. Entitled "Determined or Dumb?"
I've entered into two contests so far (Final Draft's "Big Break Contest, and SCRIPTAPALOOZA). This is the first spec I've ever written, but I feel great about it. I want to enter it into the Nicholl's Fellowship too.
I figure even the top professionals in the business had to start somewhere, so why not me?
Maybe I'm delusional. We'll see. I've recently started work on my next two specs (one, a ghost story... the other, a sequel to my first spec).
To find out more about my work, check out my blog (http://devinbennett.wordpress.com).
This world is in a sorry state and the UK is every bit to blame in my eyes - worse, some might say, since we're not even the ones trying to implement the policies (the road to hell is paved with good intentions after all), but the "hangers on".
Once this country stood up for what it believed in, now we've got a PM the papers call Bush's lapdog.
Devin, check your site, looks pretty cool. Thanks for corresponding!
Frank, thank you for your gallantry, but there's no need... I'm quite capable to dealing with "Trixie", whomever she (he?) is.
Lucy, I'm not sure that the "lapdog" is equally responsible in this, I think that Shrub and his evil court would have gone to war at any cost, with or without Blair's support. The think they're omnipotent or something. Poor deluded fools.
With all due respect to our friends and observers from across the pond [UK], THE 2004 VOTE WAS RIGGED. I'm from the state of Ohio, USA... my state was a pivotal one... and it was wrought with scandal and fraud. My wife voted for John Kerry on an electronic voting machine, and guess what happened once she made her selection – it THANKED HER FOR VOTING “BUSH”. She screamed, but there was nothing that could be done. With no paper trail... no accountability... no way to prove it, the damage was done. I wonder how many other Democrat-minded citizens were tricked and deceived by Kenneth Blackwell (Ohio’s nefarious Secretary of State... now running for Governor). So no, it’s not that we didn’t show up in record numbers and vote for Kerry (WE DID!!)... it’s that our votes were not counted or used. Messing with the voting process is something that should be dealt with as a treasonous issue (I’m thinking, punishable by firing squad or public hanging... that would be a good deterrent, albeit gruesome). I’m mad as Hell about it. If things don’t change in November... if we don’t take back the House and Senate and impeach Bush/Cheney... bye-bye America, the formerly “beautiful”.
Is anyone writing the screenplay to this? Interesting reading. And, as an ex-pat Brit living in Canada, I have to say it's no different here than anywhere else I've lived on the planet.
To Whomever is posting as "Silent Majority": I'll KEEP removing your posts as long as you continue to hide behond some wierd (and false) nom de politic.
Got something to say? Say it. But. On this blog, you gotta own it.
FYI, a less than 33% approval rating isn't reallya "majority" is it?
I never know if I'm an "aspiring" screenwriter or just a screenwriter, since I have written at least one screenplay but haven't sold a thing... I'm so confused.

Our "anon" up there is from the UK. If you're not a US citizen, "Anon" why the hellare YOU weighing in? Just trying to pick a fight?
Where's the "roll eyes" smilie when I need it!?!
WG, why are you picking on me? I'm about answers, not bickering. Will you please read my entire comment and answer my question?
Maybe we can change anon to Hannity and we can call you Colmes...
May 1 still cometh.
"I know I voted to have the fucking idiot licked out of office."
I don't know about anyone else, but I think you are going to have a hard time finding anyone to lick him out office.
